What AI Won't Tell You About Your Future Distribution Partners

Trouver un importateur distributeur avec l'IA : Ce que l'Intelligence Artificielle ne vous dira jamais

We hear it more and more in our first conversations with business leaders: "Why hire an international expansion consultancy when a good ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini prompt can give me a list of 50 importers in Australia, India or the UK in 10 seconds?"

Let's be transparent: it's absolutely true.

Today, any company can sit down, write a well-structured prompt and get a list of potential distributors on the other side of the world. Data has become a commodity. Many assume this puts the traditional business of a company like Expandys, finding export partners, at risk.

We don't feel threatened. We're convinced that in a world overflowing with data, human and strategic expertise has never been more essential. Here is what AI will never tell you about your future commercial partners.

A list is not a partner

AI compiles what is public. It scans websites and directories to tell you that Company X distributes products in your sector. What it can't read is what happens on the ground. A distributor's website may look impressive, but what about its real financial health? Does it have a genuine field sales force, or is it simply a logistics provider?

AI gives you a name. We give you what's behind it.

The "brand collector" syndrome

In our markets (Australia, the UK and India), we often see a pattern that is damaging for brands: the distributor who collects brands like trading cards. To keep competitors out, a large player agrees to distribute your brand with no intention of actively working it. You end up buried among 20 other brands in their catalogue.

An algorithm will recommend that big distributor because it has the right keywords. An Expandys specialist on the ground will rule it out immediately because they know its reputation, and will point you to a smaller player who will make your product a priority.

Relationship intelligence can't be coded

Exporting is built on trust. You won't hand your brand, your patents or your image over to an algorithm on the other side of the globe.

Finding a name is easy. The hard part is getting past the gatekeeper, reaching the real decision-maker (who is often not the person listed on LinkedIn), reading between the lines in a meeting, gauging a partner's true motivation, and negotiating margins and Incoterms. That is where the real business happens. The "last mile" of exporting is 100% human.

Strategic alignment beyond keywords

An algorithm matches keywords. We align business models.

Before contacting any partner, you need to be sure your pricing, logistics constraints (freight costs, customs duties, GST/VAT) and positioning are viable in the target market. Do you need an exclusive distributor? Should you go through a 3PL? Should you consider a joint venture to produce locally? AI can't define a strategy that complex. We can.

AI is our ally, not our replacement

At Expandys, we love AI. We use it extensively in-house, through our own Data Agents, to qualify databases, clean up CRMs and speed up time-consuming tasks.

It clears away the noise so we can focus on what truly creates value: strategy, negotiation, and closing lasting, profitable agreements for our clients.

AI will find you a list of email addresses. Expandys will find you the partner who signs your next purchase orders.
